Alazan is our top Pinot Noir and a sommelier favorite for its sophistication and depth. Named after Peter Kingston’s burgundy-colored horse in the 1950’s, Alazan is a limited, reserve bottling made from a few special cuarteles in the Kingston vineyard.

The 2012 Alazan is a little lighter bodied than earlier versions of Alazan, and more pure. There is some fresh berry fruit and the usual savory notes but it’s a bit more subtle than most years, with perhaps a touch more energy. More serious? Time will tell.

**(91 points)** Deep red. A bright, sharply focused nose displays an array of red fruit and floral qualities and a smoky mineral overtone. Lithe and gently sweet, offering raspberry, cherry and blood orange flavors and a sexy rose pastille note that gains strength as the wine opens up. Finishes on a spicy note, showing very good clarity, silky, slowly-building tannins and lingering red fruit character. -*Vinous*
