Alazan is our top Pinot Noir and a sommelier favorite for its sophistication and depth. Named after Peter Kingston’s burgundy-colored horse in the 1950’s, Alazan is a limited, reserve bottling made from a few special cuarteles in the Kingston vineyard. The 2011 Alazan is a little slow to reveal itself. The wine has a core of sweet fruit and an almost cooling quality on the palate. Aromatically it is a bit shy. There is some cherry fruit and just a touch of earthiness. The wine goes beyond the realm of dark fruit. It is less forward and fruity and not quite as big.

**(91 points)** This dense version displays a core of black cherry skin and wild berry notes that are well-integrated with juicy acidity and light tannins. Hints of grilled herb and hot stone settle in the long finish. -*Wine Spectator* **(91 points)** Brilliant ruby-red. Primary aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, complicated by hints of rose and Asian spices. Plush yet precise black raspberry and boysenberry flavors stain the palate, with a smoky quality gaining power with air. Finishes spicy and long, with suave floral character and smooth, even tannins. -*James Suckling*
